Before you do anything else, look at Problem #44 at the end of the Morales chapter and work through that on scratch paper. (You will not be submitting #44!) Then consider the following: The tablet shown is a Babylonian clay tablet inscribed in about 1600 B.C.E. It is a part of the Yale University. It shows a square drawn on a tablet. To determine what this tablet is about, first note the number that labels the upper left side of the square. This is obviously 30.

A.) There are two numbers in the middle of the square. The one on the bottom line is the following (with the “sexagesimal line” added for you) is this number:

Study this to make sure you see this number on the tablet.

What is this number in base 10? Show your work on your hand-in upload. Round to FOUR decimal places:

B.) The number that is written along the diagonal of the square is the following (with the “sexagesimal line” added for you):

Again, study this to make sure you see this number on the tablet.

What is this number in base 10? Show your work on your hand-in upload. Round to FOUR decimal places:

Hint: This number is a common square root. Use this fact to check your result.

C.) Find the geometric relationship between these the three numbers on the tablet and then clearly explain what you think the scribe was trying to demonstrate on this tablet. Hint: If you did #44 as instructed at the start of this problem, answering this question should not be too hard. Half of the grade on this problem is based on the clarity and accuracy of your explanation of this relationship, so please put effort into making sure it's clear and easy to read.

You need to SHOW your work for this problem carefully. You should start your work at the top of a clean sheet of lined paper...write your name and the problem number at the top of the page. Your work should be neat and organized so that I can understand your steps and your logic. Label all parts clearly. When you are done, take a picture of your work with a camera or scan your work into picture form. Then upload the file using the "Choose File" button to find your file on your computer. This problem will not be fully graded until after the assignment due date...your score may go up or down based on your hand work.
