When you click in the answer box, a blue answer tip may appear which gives instructions on what kind of answers are acceptable. It may indicate that the answer should be entered as a whole number, mathematical expression, decimal, fraction, algebraic expression, interval, list, etc.

Enter your answer as a mathematical expression

The blue answer tip might also give examples of possible entries as well as special instructions for certain cases. Click on [more] to see that information before you submit your answer.

Enter your answer as a number or calculation. Enter DNE for Does Not Exist or oo for infinity

Generally, if you are entering a decimal answer, it should contain 4 significant digits (e.g. 2.718 or 12.34) to get 0.1% precision, unless otherwise specified in the exercise.

If the answer tip says to enter a "mathematical expression", you can enter an answer like 2\displaystyle \sqrt{{{2}}} or 1.414, but unless it's the exact answer, 1.41 would generally not be accepted.
